Here Nor There

A photo book of images appropriated from real-time network cameras, known as "netcams”. Sam Rosenthal seeks the uncanny scenes; the ones familiar and mundane, yet unidentifiable and dreamlike. The book features fantastical imagery of palm trees, pastel colors, and vibrant sunsets that conjure up feelings of an idealistic world. But Internet connections are imperfect and data loss often translates into visual flaws of pixelation and static, breaking those idealistic illusions. This assault of dropped packets disrupts the fantasy and grounds the images in reality.

Here Nor There (published by bd-studios.com) contains over 20 images and features a conversation between Rosenthal and fellow artist Todd Durm.

Unlike Here Nor There, this zine features less picturesque netcam images where evidence of the camera lens or threshold is observed. This occurrence is an obstruction of the camera’s view and manifests as water droplets, dirt, lens flares, and even the camera’s own reflection. The Internet’s limited ability to transcend a physical location is highlighted when the viewer is placed in the threshold; only so far.

:8080 contains over 20 images.
